Overview of the Center for CLT Innovation

The Center for CLT Innovation is a not-for-profit nongovernmental organization established in 2018 to promote and to support community land trusts and similar strategies of community-led development on community-owned land in countries throughout the world. The Center provides the following services: (a) collecting and curating historical materials documenting the origins and evolution of the worldwide CLT movement; (b) conducting, cataloging, and disseminating academic and non-academic research; (c) producing case studies, directories, guides, and other educational materials; and (d) providing training, referral, and technical assistance for organizers and practitioners working with CLTs and similar strategies for the equitable and sustainable development of place-based communities. The Center publishes books and monographs under its imprint, Terra Nostra Press.

To date, the Center for CLT Innovation has relied heavily on volunteers to achieve its mission, along with a modest sprinkling of paid contractors.  But with new sources of grant funding being secured in 2023, we are in the position to hire the employees (and contractors) that will enable us to better fulfill our mission. This position will be the second full-time employee of the Center for CLT Innovation.

We are looking for someone to play a key role in codesigning and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy for the Center for CLT Innovation.  And as a fluent Spanish speaker, the Communications Manager will help us greatly expand our reach in Latin America, Spain, and within the US.  As we are an international organization, the Communications Manager will need to work in a highly collaborative fashion with other staff, contractors, board members and volunteers spread around the world.  As with all of our staff, this person will need to be a skilled self-learner when it comes to serving the educational needs of the international community land trust movement -- as well as learning how to use the continually evolving technical tools that will enable us to reach them. And it will be essential that this person is well-organized and highly self-motivated.

The Communications Manager will have the following responsibilities:

  • Play a lead role in our work in Latin America and Spain, as well as working with Spanish speakers in the US -- writing new content, coordinating translation and interpretation, facilitating meetings, and moderating webinars.  The Communications Manager will also provide staff support for our new Global South CLT Network initiative.
  • Design and implement new strategies around social media, podcasting, and video.
  • Coordinate the publication of regular educational newsletters for distribution to our global email list.
  • Collaborate in the redesign of our website and website content updates.
  • Coordinate World CLT Day in the spring of 2024, an annual event that builds solidarity within the CLT movement and creates awareness of the contributions of CLTs among the general public.
  • Assist with the following activities:
    • Fundraising efforts, grant applications and funder reports.
    • Coordination of educational webinars.
    • Marketing publications from Terra Nostra Press.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proficiency in the following applications:  Google Docs/Sheets/Drive, Mailchimp, MS Office, WordPress, Zoom -- as well as social media applications such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
  • Full professional fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Comfortable and culturally competent in a diverse workspace and diverse field.
  • Three years of experience in digital media. A BA/BS degree in a relevant field of study will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Additional consideration will be provided to candidates who:
    • Have experience working with community land trusts, and/or
    • Have experience working with nonprofits with an international mission.

The salary range for this full-time fully remote position is $50,000 to $70,000 per year, plus benefits.  Qualified candidates who would prefer a three-quarter time position will also be considered, with compensation and benefits prorated accordingly. This position will report to the Center for CLT Innovation’s Coordinator, Greg Rosenberg.
